Blog #2 - Privacy

Privacy is a thing that is all too simple yet in today's day and age it seems like this basic human right is nearly impossible to achieve. Being in Gen Z I feel as though I have a constant pressure of needing to share and post what I am doing and what is going on in my life on social media, sharing my world with the entire world. Something that is extremely violating and beyond frustrating that happens all too often is having fake social media accounts and or websites created about me and so many different young people throughout the world. I am not happy to say that I have had to personally deal with being used as an advertisement for inappropriate websites such as OnlyFans and AdmireMe. People will use pictures of my face and body from my social media accounts to promote people buying subscriptions to their inappropriate websites. This is completely unacceptable as I have been personally dealing with this since before I was even a legal adult. Being a minor and seeing yourself being used in that way makes you lose much of your sense of self-worth. This is similar to the personal story that activist Darieth Chisolm shared in her TED talk about revenge porn. The United States government must take action to protect not only its citizens but the children in this country that are being taken advantage of and being sexualized as this is unacceptable for any young person to experience. There are steps that we can take as individuals to help protect our privacy and self. For example, keeping our social platforms private and clearing out our technology so that we are not being tracked and traced by unknown software that easily embeds itself into our personal devices.
